Three Centuries of Craft
Every Arte Andino hat begins its life in the highlands of Ecuador, where master weavers have practised the same technique for generations. Using fibres hand-stripped from the toquilla palm, each hat is woven stitch by stitch — a process that can take weeks for finer grades. No machines. No shortcuts. Just skill passed from parent to child across centuries.
Our artisans work in the workshops of Montecristi and Cuenca — the two historic centres of Panama hat production. Montecristi hats, woven from the finest fibres under controlled humidity, represent the pinnacle of the craft. Cuenca hats, renowned for their consistency and elegance, offer exceptional quality at every grade. Both carry a tradition that UNESCO has recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Every hat comes with a signed certificate of authenticity, verifying its origin, weaving technique, and quality grade. When you buy from Arte Andino, you know exactly what you’re getting — and so does anyone who asks.
How to Choose Your Grade
Panama hat quality is measured in grades — a system based on the fineness of the weave, the number of rows per inch, and the uniformity of the fibres. Grade 1 hats are robust everyday companions; Grade 30+ Superfinos are collector’s pieces woven so tightly they can hold water.
At Arte Andino, our collection spans Grade 3 to Grade 25 — the full range of what a discerning buyer might want. We describe each hat’s grade honestly, with photographs taken in natural light, so you can make an informed choice without guesswork. Not sure which grade is right for you? Our size and grade guide answers the most common questions.
Whether you’re looking for a reliable summer hat or a lifelong heirloom, we’ll help you find the right fit. Browse by grade, style, or origin — or contact us directly and we’ll make a personal recommendation.
Authentic. Ethical. Yours.
Arte Andino was founded on a simple belief: that the people who weave these hats deserve fair recognition for their work, and that the people who wear them deserve to know exactly what they’ve bought. We source directly from weaving cooperatives, paying above fair-trade rates, and we trace every hat back to its workshop.
We ship across the UK and Europe from our base in Germany — typically within 2–3 business days. Every order includes a 30-day return window, a certificate of authenticity, and our personal guarantee: if the hat isn’t what you expected, we’ll make it right.
